Classic Labor Day Strip Tale: Tiger-Cats vs. Argonauts – Hamilton


The struggling Hamilton Tiger-Cats are hoping history will repeat itself when they host the Toronto Argonauts in the annual Labor Day Classic on Monday afternoon.

Hamilton (3-8) enters the game on a two-game losing streak, including a 37-20 loss to the Argos (5-5) at BMO Field on Aug. 26.

Monday’s pre-game show on 900 CHML radio begins at 12 p.m. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.

With starting QB Dane Evans nursing a shoulder injury and backup center Matthew Shiltz on the injured list with a wrist injury, quarterback Jamie Newman will likely make his first CFL start.

Newman, who is playing his first season in the Canadian Football League, completed his two passing attempts for four yards.

Despite the slow start to the 2022 season, the Ticats’ prominence against Argos on Labor Day resulted in Hamilton’s first sale of the year to Tim Hortons Field.

“The fact that they (the fans) show up like that shows how passionate they are about winning, about the football team,” Tiger-Cats head coach Orlondo Steinauer said. β€œIt’s just a great thing for the City of Hamilton.

In each of their last seven Labor Day meetings, Hamilton has gotten the better of its rival, including a 32-19 win over Toronto last year.

Monday’s game marks the 51st time since 1950 that the Tiger-Cats and Argonauts have met in the Labor Day game. Hamilton led the all-time Labor Day series against Toronto with a 36-13 record and a tie.

The Argos won two of their three games against the Ticats this season and outscored Hamilton 98-74.

  • Monday’s game will be the 10th time Hamilton and Toronto have met in the last 12 months. The Argos have won six of their last nine games against the Ticats, including two of their three encounters in 2022.
  • The Ticats were outscored 119-50 in the fourth quarter this season. The Cats didn’t fare much better in the third, having been outscored 74-49. Hamilton was much better in the first half, outscoring their opponents 63-42 in the first quarter and 81-64 in the second quarter.
  • Tiger-Cats QB Jamie Newman played 19 games in three seasons with Wake Forest during his college career. The 24-year-old North Carolina native completed 60.5% of his passes for 3,959 yards, 35 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
