According to the New York Post, Marissa Young, 44, of Torrance, was walking her dogs around 1 a.m. when she was attacked from behind by a man who pushed her to the ground and raped her.

« This person punched me in the face with closed fists at least 15 to 20 times, » she told KTLA. « My nose is broken in four different places. »

Young told CBS News she was fighting for her life for « probably three-quarters of the attack, » which lasted nearly half an hour.

« It was a crime of opportunity, because I’m short and had my back to him, » she told the outlet.

A homeless man, Darrell Waters, 46, was charged with one count each of forced rape, forced oral copulation and forcible sexual penetration.

CBS News reported that police said Waters had been arrested days earlier for misdemeanor unlawful possession of a dagger and had just been released from prison on his own recognizance just 12 hours before the attack.

Young told KTLA that she was not happy to learn that the suspect was released from prison so soon after his previous arrest.

CBS News said Waters was arrested and charged about 24 hours after Young’s assault near the crime scene.
