Box office: “Avatar: Fire And Ash” beats “28 Years Later: Bone Temple” with more than $17 million

Here’s the thing, while Sony needed franchises and likes to support author-driven content, this is a very niche, very gory, and somewhat intellectual horror zombie series. This is not a horror franchise aimed at a mass audience. While Temple of Bones performed quite well last summer, it wasn’t at a high level one would expect for a long-delayed series, and the audience scores were good, not through the roof. Moving on from there, even if the follow-up here gets a better audience reaction, it’s hard to build and explode the OK word of mouth from the previous episode. Consider the box office algorithm that whenever a long-delayed sequel opens with any type of fan appreciation (28 years later arrive in theaters 18 years later 28 weeks later), it’s likely to be a record-breaking start for the franchise. The diversity demos were: 50% White (up from 46%), 28% Hispanic and Latino (up from 25%), 8% Black (up from 12%), and 8% Asian American (up from 10%).
