Box office: “Avatar: Fire And Ash” beats “28 Years Later: Bone Temple” with more than $17 million

SATURDAY AM: Looks Like James Cameron’s Na’Vi Scares Sony’s Infected At MLK Box Office As 20th Century Studios Avatar: Fire and Ash is on the way to a $17.6 million fifth four-day weekend while 28 days later: the temple of bones is progressing toward its follow-on projections of more than $20 million with $15 million (rivals see it much lower). 3 days from $13.2 millionthis is the second highest opening in the Danny Boyle-Alex Garland franchise after last June 28 years later ($30 million).

These figures for The Temple of Bones are a disappointment. Neither Sony, nor the theaters, nor anyone wanted to see the film at that level, especially as the only MLK weekend opener. On the plus side, the fourth title in the British zombie series directed by Nia DaCosta, written by Alex Garland and produced by Danny Boyle gets an A-CinemaScore and a very good 72% definite recommendation on PostTrak from Screen Engine/Comscore, which is better than the B CinemaScore and 52% definite recommendation on 28 years later. Will positive word of mouth come into play? I don’t know…

Here’s the thing, while Sony needed franchises and likes to support author-driven content, this is a very niche, very gory, and somewhat intellectual horror zombie series. This is not a horror franchise aimed at a mass audience. While Temple of Bones performed quite well last summer, it wasn’t at a high level one would expect for a long-delayed series, and the audience scores were good, not through the roof. Moving on from there, even if the follow-up here gets a better audience reaction, it’s hard to build and explode the OK word of mouth from the previous episode. Consider the box office algorithm that whenever a long-delayed sequel opens with any type of fan appreciation (28 years later arrive in theaters 18 years later 28 weeks later), it’s likely to be a record-breaking start for the franchise. Any subsequent sequel usually sees a drop in its opening, read 2020s Bad boys for life posts the highest opening ever for the series at $62.5 million, while the 2024 sequel Bad Boys: Ride or Die is down 10% with an opening of $56.5 million. Another example: Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens to $247.9 million, while Last Jedi opens to $220M, -11% between openings. There is a bigger gap between national debuts here for Temple of Bones And 28 years later at -56%.

Demos on Temple of Bones are on par with that of last June 28 years later: Men over 25 are present in both cases with 49%, followed by women over 25 with 26%, with a slightly higher proportion of men under 25 (17% this time at 13%), and fewer women under 25 (9% here compared to 12%). The diversity demos were: 50% White (up from 46%), 28% Hispanic and Latino (up from 25%), 8% Black (up from 12%), and 8% Asian American (up from 10%).

PLF screens make up 36% of the weekend, with the West best in what is broadly equal across the country. AMC Grove in Los Angeles is the primary filming location for the $23.1K DaCosta film.

Let’s see where the international comes in Temple of Bonesthe film having a 98% offshore footprint. Assuming the net production cost of $63 million is true, then it is important to save the P&L of this sequel. 28 years later finalized at $151.3 million worldwide against a net production cost of $60 million before P&A.

In the meantime, Avatar: Fire and Ash should arrive at a running global cume that lies north of $1.3 billionwhile Zootopia 2 should come this way $1.68 billion WW. Zootopia 2 by the end of Monday, it appears to be within $7 million of the crossing 400 million dollars at the national BO

All MLK Weekend Friday-Monday Is Coming $102 million for all films, up 8% from last year’s $94.2 million, but third-best take for the post-Covid holiday season; 2023 is the best when the fifth weekend Avatar: Way of Water and the second weekend of M3GAN ruled.

FRIDAY PM: Na’vi and the Infected battle for first place during a very slow MLK weekend. The major film studios, in their commitment to cinema, have forgotten to release wider films, with Sony being the only one with the courage to face the fifth weekend of the 20th Century Studio. Avatar: Fire and Ash with 28 years later: the Temple of Bones. Currently, both are examining $15 million over four days.

Disney’s Fifth Weekend Last Year Mufasa: The Lion King led with $15.4 million over four days with Sony One of these days in second place with $14 million and Universal/Blumhouse’s Wolfman – which was expected but didn’t – debuting to $12.2 million. The entire frame from Friday to Monday was $94.2 million. Let’s hope we’re not lower.

28 years later: the Temple of Bones currently seeing a $5.8 million Friday, which includes Thursday night’s $2.1 million. Heading into the weekend, analytics firm RelishMix measured the suite’s social media universe at 186.3 million across YouTube, TikTok, X, Facebook and Instagram, 17% behind 28 years later was this summer, but 1% ahead in social media reach compared to other standards of the horror franchise genre. “THE 28 years old The cast are not great drivers with the two off-grid leaders and Chi Louis Parry bringing 131,000 fans and Emma Laird with 108,000,” reports RelishMix.
