Bone Temple Soft at the box office

THE 28 years later The franchise is back in theaters, just seven months after the previous installment brought the zombie film series back to life. Today, it faces headwinds while battling the fallout. Avatar: Fire and Ash at the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend box office despite strong reviews and audience backlash.

28 years later: the Temple of Bones earned $5.6 million Friday and hopes to raise about $15 million over the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. That’s far behind the first 28 years oldwhich opened to $30 million over three days in June, and behind the $20 million initially projected for Temple of Bones going into the weekend.

Avatar 3now in its fifth weekend, grossed $3.2 million on Friday and could end up with $17 million to win the four-day weekend. So far, the film has raked in $353.4 million domestically and over $1.23 billion worldwide.

THE 28 years later The franchise comes from director Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland, who brought the film series to Sony after a heated bidding war. Filmmaker Nia DaCosta takes the director’s chair on Temple of Bonesthe second part of a planned trilogy, with Sony announcing last month that it would be making a third installment with Cillian Murphy, the star of the original. 28 days later – with Boyle returning to direct.

Sony insiders hope word of mouth might give Temple of Bones legs. The feature earned good reviews (94% on Rotten Tomatoes), an A-CinemaScore (a rare, high rating for a horror film), and a PostTrak rating of 4.5. Temple of Bones stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman and Chi Lewis-Parry.

Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet develops after winning best drama at the Golden Globes on January 11, with Oscar nominee Jesse Buckley taking home the acting prize. The film, which began in limited release on Thanksgiving, increased its theater count to 718 this weekend and is expected to gross $1.6 million for the four days, bringing its domestic total to $15 million. Focus Features plans further expansion after Oscar nominations are announced.

Filmmaker Josh Safdie Marty Supreme has become an overachiever since its Christmas release, and observers are curious to see if it will see an improvement following Timothée Chalamet’s best actor win at the Globes. It is expected to gross around $6.9 million over four days, which would bring the domestic total to $80 million.
