The Internet user who had broadcast earlier this week a bloody image of the caquiste deputy of Chauveau, Sylvain Lévesque, was arrested, revealed the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) this Saturday morning. It was the Major Crimes Investigation Division of the Sûreté du Québec that made his arrest on the evening of September 1.
The individual, a 44-year-old man, was arrested at his home in the municipality of Sainte-Béatrix. He has since been released, but will appear on September 29 at the Joliette courthouse.
“It will be the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) who will determine the charges that will be filed against him. It is recalled that the investigation is still in progress concerning the perpetrator or perpetrators of the misdeeds against the electoral signs, ”specifies Nicolas Scholtus, spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
Recall that the caquiste Sylvain Lévesque had filed a complaint following the posting of his bloody portrait on August 31: “I went to file a complaint at the police station this morning. This kind of publication is unacceptable. We can be against ideas, but violence and intimidation will never be tolerated. Despite this, nothing will prevent me from going to meet the citizens of Chauveau, ”he said in a tweet.
In addition to this bloody image posted by an Internet user, other violent incidents against elected officials have occurred this week, making the safety of candidates a major concern in the current election campaign.
The outgoing Liberal MP for Saint-Laurent, Marwah Rizqy, has been targeted by death threats. During the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the constituency office of Liberal MP Enrico Ciccone was vandalized.
Thursday, François Legault appealed for calm, imploring the population not to “stir up anger”. The outgoing Prime Minister has also set up a telephone service accessible at all times, for the candidates of the five main political parties who do not feel safe.
