The Supreme Court on Friday (August 29) agreed to hear the extension of pleas for filing objections to the Election Commission of India (ECI) Special Examination Review (SIR) in Bihar.

The court listed the matter for urgent hearing on September 1.

Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan raised the issue before the court on behalf of the plea filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) party.

The plea asserted that the Election Commission opposes any request for extension of the timetable for filing objections.

He argued that thousands of objections were filed after the Supreme Court’s directions.

Earlier on August 22, the court ordered the Election Commission to use the Aadhaar card to verify the identity of those excluded from the voters’ list.

The court directed the EC to allow excluded voters to submit claims through online mode besides making physical submissions in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise of the electoral roll in Bihar.

Opposition parties have alleged a conspiracy behind the voter roll exercise. They accused the center of manipulating voter data and subsequently the list.

Bihar is expected to go to the Assembly elections later this year.
