The Election Commission has warned political parties against misusing AI to create deepfakes or distort information during the Bihar assembly polls.

In a statement issued on Thursday (October 9), the electoral authority also reminded parties of its instructions to prominently label Al-generated content or synthetic content shared for campaigning via their social media platforms or in the form of advertisements.

Parties, featured campaigners and candidates must clearly declare that content is “Al-generated”, “digitally enhanced” or “synthetic content”.

He warned that strict monitoring of social media posts was being exercised to ensure the election atmosphere was not tainted.

“The Commission advised parties not to misuse AI-based tools to create deep fakes that distort information or spread misinformation on social media platforms, emphasizing the need to maintain the integrity of the electoral process,” it added.

During the last Lok Sabha elections, the EC had issued a series of guidelines to parties against the misuse of artificial intelligence to prevent the spread of misinformation.

Bihar will go to polls in two phases on November 6 and 11 with counting of votes on November 14.
