The secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, will remain in his role as commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, with a new civil servant who will be announced as his first deputy, learned Eamon Javers from CNBC.

Bessent resumed the IRS in August after President Donald Trump withdrew Billy long from the post only two months after his confirmation. No secretary to the previous treasure had also directed the IRS, raising questions about the politicization of the tax collection service. For a long time, he has been nominated to be the American ambassador to Iceland.

Although the situation was supposed to be temporary, Trump decided that he wanted to be careful of the agency, sources familiar with the Tell CNBC issue.

Although Bessent will retain the role of commissioner, he should announce that Frank Bisignano will hold the position of CEO newly created at the IRS. Bisignano is currently Social Security Administration Commissioner.

His new role will have bisignano supervising all daily operations at IRS, while also being SSA commissioner.

Bisignano was previously Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fiserv, the largest financial technology and payment technology company in the world. He directed the 2019 merger of FISERV and First Data while being CEO of First Data.

In addition, he was also co-chief of the farm and CEO of the mortgage banking unit of JPMorgan Chase in the 2000s. Before that, he held various positions at Citigroup.

Bessent and Bisignano should wear two hats indefinitely in the administration.

In addition to his roles in Treasury and IRS, Bessent directed the search to replace the president of the Federal Reserve Jerome Powell when his mandate expires as the Central Bank chief in May 2026. Some 11 candidates have been interviewed so far, this group should be written this week, then a group of three to five finalists sent to Trump, said Bessent on CNBC.
