Beloved New York bodega cat returned to owners after allegedly stolen

A bodega cat in New York has been reunited with its owners – a week after it was allegedly snatched outside the doors of the grocery store.

Boka the cat was lounging outside Green Olives Deli & Grill in Brooklyn on July 29 when a suspected thief picked him up and ran away.

Surveillance video showed a man in a blue hat and white shirt lifting Boka and walking away.

Boka, the bodega’s cat, was returned to its owners after being picked up at the end of July.

The heartbroken bodega owners then launched a social media campaign to get Boka back.

Abdulmajeed Albahri, one of three owners of the Park Slope bodega, told the New York Post that someone walked into his store with information about the whereabouts of the cats last Friday.

« He told me he was trying to convince the guy to give the cat back, » Albahri said. « I told him everything is fine for now. I just need my cat back. »

When Albhari arrived at the bodega at 5am on Saturday morning, he was greeted by Boka sitting outside. Albhari says he spent the next hour playing with the feline and feeding it treats before opening the deli at 6 a.m.

The owners of the bodega gushed about Boka’s return to Instagram.

Instead of seeking justice, the deli owners said they were just happy Boka was back and weren’t focusing on finding the alleged thief.

Bodega cats are a unique facet of life in New York. These working felines – some of which are strays – are usually deployed to protect delicatessens from mouse infestation.
