“Due to a bat infestation, the station has been determined to pose a health and safety risk to firefighters,” the statement said. “Bats flew into living quarters and dead bats were found in the appliance bay.”
First responders working at the station are moved to a nearby station as the bat infestation is dealt with. The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District also plans to increase coordination with the Carson City Fire Department at the south end of Washoe Valley.
“The district will consult with experts to determine what prevention and remediation work is needed to eliminate bat colonies and associated hazards,” the statement said.
This isn’t the first time the fire district has faced a bat problem.
“The fire district attempted to remedy the problem in 2015, only to have the bats return,” the statement said. “Staff will consider possible options, including cleaning up contamination.”
The fire district also notes that rabies is a concern when it comes to bats, as well as other diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
