Auston Matthews to miss second straight Leafs game with undisclosed injury

Auston Matthews will not play when the Leafs host the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at Scotiabank Arena, but will travel with the team on its upcoming three-game road trip.

“He’s feeling better, but we still want to give him some time,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said after the morning practice.

Matthews, who missed the Leafs’ win over the Islanders on Sunday with an undisclosed injury, skated with several other injured players Thursday morning. He looked ready to play, but Keefe said the team wouldn’t rush their best player.

Keefe said Matthews, who is two goals shy of 60, had a “minor issue” when he spoke to the media on Sunday. Keefe did not disclose the nature of the injury Thursday morning.

Keefe added that Matthews will travel with the team on its three-game road trip, which begins Thursday against the Tampa Bay Lightning, a team that is shaping up to be the Leafs’ first-round playoff opponent.

The other three Leafs skating with Matthews on Thursday morning were Jake Muzzin, Ondřej Kaše and Rasmus Sandin.

Muzzin, who also missed two games with an undisclosed injury, will also travel with road trip team Keefe siad.

Kaše, out for a month with a concussion, skated with his teammates for the first time since his injury. The striker continues to progress well, but there was no specific timetable for his return.

Sandin, who is recovering from a knee injury, will not travel with the team this week, but Keefe said “we are working on what we hope will be the possibility of him being available next week”.
