Armed attack in Vieux-Saint-Jean

The Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police carried out a high-risk intervention to arrest an armed individual yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, in the city center. The 48-year-old man is said to have carried out an armed attack and caused damage to a vehicle.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m., opposite 75, rue Richelieu. The suspect visibly in crisis was armed with a knife. He started throwing a lot of objects in the middle of the street, like clothes and tools. Shattered glass in the passageway leading to a public parking lot indicated mischief committed on a vehicle.

“The man allegedly attacked people in the area verbally. He would have threatened them with his knife in his hands, ”describes Sergeant Jérémie Levesque, of the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu police department.

The patrol officers commanded their orders, stun guns in hand. Despite his agitation, the individual complied with the requests of the police. The man is known to law enforcement. Law enforcement officers had previously arrested him last month in connection with a similar event.

The man was kept detained after his arrest. He is due to appear today (Friday) at the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu courthouse.
