Arkansas County jail guard shot dead by man in custody

PERRYVILLE, Ark. (AP) — A Central Arkansas County jail guard was fatally shot by a man incarcerated in the jail, state police said Thursday.

No names and few details about Wednesday night’s shooting at the Perry County Jail in Perryville, about 35 miles northwest of Little Rock, were immediately released.

A statement from Arkansas State Police said the suspect is a 37-year-old man who was arrested by Perry County deputies and was incarcerated at the time of the shooting.

The sheriff’s office has asked state police to investigate the shooting and more information would be released later Thursday, the statement said.
