Andreescu overtakes top seed to reach Wimbledon warm-up semis

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu defeated top-seeded Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-4, 6-1 in the quarterfinals Thursday at the Bad Homburg Open.

Unseeded Andreescu, who is yet to drop a set in the Wimbledon warm-up tournament, needed 82 minutes to claim victory.

Kasatkina, 13th in the standings, committed six double faults and won just three of 17 points on her second serve. Andreescu, world No. 64 from Mississauga, Ont., converted five of six break point chances.

The Canadian will face either fourth-seeded Simona Halep of Romania or sixth-seeded American Amanda Anisimova in the semifinals.

This will be Andreescu’s first semi-final appearance this season. The 2019 US Open champion also reached the quarter-finals last month in Rome before falling to top-seeded Iga Swiatek of Poland.
