American air travelers are experiencing a second day of delays and cancellations, as the government closure causes aggravation of air traffic controllers.
Tuesday evening, flight delays struck even more airports, the cities of Nashville, Dallas, Chicago and Newark particularly affected.
On Monday, air traffic control at Hollywood Burbank airport in California was unmanned for almost six hours and managed remotely due to staff shortages.
Transport Secretary Sean Duffy said some air traffic controllers are calling for patients while closing, now in his seventh day, adds stress to workers. He estimated that the staff sometimes fell to 50% in certain regions.
Air traffic controllers are considered essential workers and should operate without salary during government closings.
About 3,200 American flights were delayed on Tuesday afternoon, according to Flightaware.
Endowment problems on Monday affected flights to Newark, Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas and Burbank Airport, causing delays from 40 minutes to 60 minutes, according to flight data.
Tuesday evening, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a field time at the O’Hare airport in Chicago. It is not known when the delay is planned to end.
Nashville and Dallas also experienced delays on Tuesday, according to the FAA.
Nashville International Airport published on Tuesday an opinion indicating that all the flights that entered and came out of the city would be “reduced” due to a shortage of air controllers. The airport said it would cause delays, but the discounts would continue “until further notice”.
Drew MacQueen, an official of the National Air Traffic Coleners Association union, told Newsnation that his colleagues were excited and too stressed not to be paid.
“Air traffic controllers did not start stopping and certainly the air traffic controllers will not end the closure. It depends on politicians,” said Macqueen.
“What they don’t need is the fatigue of treating this work while being in the short term, working six days a week, 10 hours a day,” he continued. “Now they are worried when they are paid.”
On Tuesday marked the second day of airport delays caused by endowment problems linked to the closure.
The closure began on October 1 after republican and democratic legislators do not agree on the resolution of a budget dispute. We do not know when they can break the dead end at the congress.
Some 40% of the federal workforce – approximately 750,000 people – has placed on unpaid leave when closing while essential officials should continue to work without salary.
The National Air Traffic Cuellers Association, which represents more than 20,000 air traffic controllers, engineers and air security professionals, worked on employees that the fact of not arising could lead to termination.
“Participation in professional action could result in the withdrawal of the federal service,” published the union on its website. “It is not only illegal, but it also undermines the credibility of Natca and seriously weakens our ability to effectively defend you and your families.”
The warning intervened after the Secretary of Transport, Duffy, said at a press conference on Monday that there had been a “slight tick” in air traffic controllers calling for patients.
“You will see delays resulting from it,” he said, adding that security is priority even if it means certain delays or cancellations.
He said air controllers should be able to focus on work and not have to worry about a payroll.
“Now what they think because they control our airspace:” How will I pay my mortgage? “” He said.
Addressing Fox News, Duffy said that regulators would slow the number of planes in the air due to the shortage of security personnel.
“If we do not have controllers, we will make sure that airspace is safe. So what we do is that we will slow traffic,” Duffy said on Tuesday.
The pressure on American plane trips helped to end a government closure in 2019. At the time, the closure entered its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.
He prompted several air traffic controllers to stay at home on January 25, 2019, temporarily closing trips to Laguardia airport in New York.
On the same day, Donald Trump, who was at the time at the time at his first mandate as president, agreed to sign a short -term spending bill, ending the government’s closure after 35 days.
