The actions of Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) increased by 37% of pre-commercial exchanges on Monday, October 6, after the company announced an agreement of several billion dollars with the OPENAI of Sam Altman.

The two companies have signed a final agreement before the open market, under which Openai will deploy 6 gigawatts (GW) of AMD graphic processing units (GPU) over several years.

OPENAI has also received mandates for 160 million shares or 10% participation in AMD, which will convert as the subsequent stages are reached. The objectives require that the course of AMD action continues to increase the value, because one of the tranches will even be acquired at $ 600 each. AMD shares had closed the negotiation session on Friday at $ 164.

The announcement comes just two weeks after Nvidia, the direct competitor of AMD and the most popular company in the world, announced that it will invest up to $ 100 billion in Openai to build IA infrastructure and new data centers, which will have a capacity of at least 10 GW.

Delighted to associate with AMD to use their chips to serve our users!

All this is progressive to our work with NVIDIA (and we plan to increase our NVIDIA purchases over time).

The world needs much more calculation …

– Sam Altman (@sama) October 6, 2025

We still don’t know how Sam Altman and Opena will finance the huge capital requirements to configure data centers. Earlier, he spoke of a “new type” of financial instruments, without developing a lot on details.

In a press release on the New Deal, the chief executive, Lisa SU, said that AMD was “delighted to associate with Openai to deliver a compute on the large scale AI”. Altman described the partnership of “major stages in strengthening the calculation capacity necessary to carry out the full potential of AI”, adding that the “leadership in high performance fleas” of the AMD would help open the technology to more people faster.

AMD GPU revenues should reach $ 6.55 billion this year and the agreement with OPENAI will be accessible compared to next year and accelerate from 2027. Managers expect the agreement to take the overall headline of AMD to exceed $ 100 billion, but did not develop the deadline.

The first gigawatt of chips will take place in the second half of 2026, that is to say at that time that the first slice of mandates issued in Openai by AMD will also be acquired.

While AMD shares are up up to 37% in pre-commercial exchanges, those of Nvidia are down 1.5%.
