Adam Driver’s second shirtless Burberry campaign goes viral. Still

With the good, the bad and the ugly, ‘Look of the week’ is a regular series dedicated to unboxing the most talked about outfit in the last seven days.

As August dawns, one definitive accessory grabs the headlines of summer: an enviable set of sculpted abs.

On Monday, Adam Driver went viral again for a bare-breasted, salt-of-the-earth Burberry campaign promoting the brand’s « Burberry Hero » eau de parfum. Barefoot and – most importantly – shirtless, the actor can be seen running across a deserted beach at dusk with a mighty caramel-colored horse in tow.

The two dive into the ocean together and emerge as a single shapeshifter, merging the romantic trope of the hero on horseback with a healthy dose of Greek mythology. Directed by Jonathan Glazer and photographed by Mario Sorrenti, the ad for the fragrance follows on from the first frenetic « centaur » ad launched by the brand exactly a year ago.

The actor’s fan base was quick to suggest that the robust campaign images – which show Driver shirtless in crystal water from the waist down – were a unanimous societal response to the question, « What is the female gaze? » (Derived from feminist critical theory, the term is generally used to describe art that departs from the objectifying male perspective that dominates modern culture.)

But Driver’s commercial was by no means the only high-profile torso of the week. She wasn’t the only one to become a topic of feminist discussion, either.

In the Women’s Euro 2022 soccer final on Sunday, England’s Chloe Kelly caused a stir with her shirtless goal celebration at Wembley Stadium in London. Ecstatic to win the tournament for the first time in her country’s history, Kelly ran onto the grass and happily stripped off her « Lioness » shirt to reveal a Nike sports bra and a skinny belly – a moment that is already dubbed « the feminist image ». of the decade. »

Reveling in the team’s achievement, Kelly’s celebration was not « for sex or show, » wrote journalist Lucy Ward, in a Tweeter who has since been liked over 154,000 times, but « just for the sheer joy of what she can do and the power and skill she possesses ».
