A public consultation to choose the next head of the SPVM

The City of Montreal is pausing the selection process for its next police chief, in order to include a public consultation.

The Plante administration therefore wants to involve civil society more in the development of the Montreal police model, a request that emerged during the work of the Montreal Forum for the Fight against Armed Violence.

“The Forum reminded us that consultation is an essential ingredient in public security strategies. As an administration, we have the responsibility to involve the population in the important choices that concern them,” declared Dominique Ollivier, president of the city’s executive committee.

The terms of the consultation process will be presented in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, Sophie Roy should act as interim head of the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) until the fall. The City has recommended his appointment to the Quebec government, which will then have to officially approve him.

She will temporarily succeed Sylvain Caron, who announced his retirement last March.
