A police watchdog is investigating the death of a 26-year-old man in North York
The Ontario police watchdog launched an investigation after a man died in North York early Sunday morning.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit is called in to investigate conduct by officials that could have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and the discharge of a firearm at a person.
In a statement, the SIU said Saturday evening around 10:30 p.m. Toronto police were called to the area of Finch Avenue East and Leslie Street to a knife-wielding man making threats and mental distress.
The SIU said two officers then took the man into custody, where he entered medical distress, and provided him with medical care until paramedics arrived.
The man was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.
Anyone with information about the investigation, including photos or video, is urged to contact the SIU.
