Virginia Democrats are pushing to gain more power through redistricting as the all-important midterm elections approach.
The Virginia state Senate approved a constitutional amendment to redraw the maps of the U.S. House of Representatives in the final step of presenting it to voters, Fox News reported Saturday.
“If the ballot measure is approved this spring, the Legislature, rather than the current nonpartisan commission, would redraw the state’s congressional maps through 2030,” the outlet said:
Virginia is the latest battleground in the high-stakes battle between President Donald Trump and Republicans versus Democrats to change congressional maps ahead of the November election. And Virginia Democrats, who currently control six of the state’s 11 congressional districts, are aiming to pick up as many as four additional left-leaning seats.
Republicans have a slim majority in the House and Democrats need only three seats to retake the House, according to the report. Meanwhile, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) denounced the U.S. Supreme Court’s refusal to block Congress’ updated redistricting maps, a plan expected to favor Republicans, according to Breitbart News.
“The Supreme Court’s decision leaves intact Texas’ new map for the 2026 elections – a map that not only solidifies Republican control but also pushes Crockett out of his current district,” the report said.
In August, President Donald Trump said he might recommend holding a Republican National Convention before the midterm elections.
