A man barricaded himself in a Miami home after opening fire and wounding two police officers early Thursday, and another man was taken into custody, the police chief said.

Shortly before 7 a.m., officers were dispatched to an intersection in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood in response to a call about an abandoned vehicle and called for a tow truck. After receiving a report of gunshots, officers noticed the vehicle was riddled with bullet holes, said Chief Manuel A. Morales of the Miami Police Department.

The officers then came under fire, with one shot in the knee and the other in the ankle, Chief Morales said at a news conference. The officers are in stable condition in hospital, he said.

After other law enforcement officers arrived and set up a perimeter, the man came out of the house and exchanged gunfire with them, the chief said, adding that the officers knew the shooter and had dealt with him in the past.

Chief Morales called it a “chaotic scene.” Another man was in custody and was being questioned, he said.

Officers who responded to the initial call did not discharge their weapons, he said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
