Sony and AMD today released a new video on the PlayStation YouTube channel that provides an update on the two companies’ work on Project Amethyst, which sees them exploring the future of technology together.

Some of this research will culminate in the PS6, to which system architect Mark Cerny says: “Overall, these technologies are still in their early stages, they only exist in simulation at the moment, but the results are quite promising and I’m really excited to bring them to a future console in a few years.”

This technology is focused on machine learning which will improve graphics and gameplay in the future. For now, at least, the PS5 Pro benefits from research across a PSSR the visuals will be improved next year. This has been described as the “full version” of the current FSR 4 technology available now on PC.

You can learn more about the technology and how the two companies are collaborating in the video embedded above.

These latest comments line up with previous statements from Sony reps, all of which point to a PS6 release still a few years away. Earlier this year, Cerny said he was working on a “multi-year plan” when it comes to the next generation. Rumors suggest the PS6 will launch alongside a handheld device, which Sony seems to be secretly preparing for via a new low-power mode for the current PS5. There is also speculation that Sony will once again opt for a removable disc drive for the PS6.

Liam Croft

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love of Metal Gear Solid. These days he plays the latest and greatest PS5 games and supports Derby County. This last detail is its downfall.
