MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Special Olympics Madison County says it needs volunteers for the 56th Madison County Track and Field Games, which will be held in two weeks.

The matches will take place on October 21 at Milton Frank Stadium.

“These track and field games are the largest in the state and will bring together more than 525 local athletes,” organizers said. “With only two weeks left and a shortage of volunteers, we need to reach out to the community for help.”

Special Olympics is a sports and recreational program for athletes with intellectual disabilities, co-sponsored by the Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Foundation. The goal of the program is “to improve the self-confidence of child and adult athletes (ages 8 and up) and emphasizes
the importance of finishing an event and doing your best.”

Track and field is one of twelve sports offered by Special Olympics Madison County.

Depending on the organization, volunteer duties at these athletic games may include escorting athletes to the correct game on time, helping run one of the athletic games, helping unload and load buses, helping present awards, or anything else that can contribute to the success of these important games.

Joni Haas, current Special Olympics track and field chair, said these games provide an opportunity for athletes to compete for a spot at the state games in May 2026, and they desperately need volunteers to help run these events to ensure athletes have that opportunity.

You can register as a volunteer by following this link.

They not only accept volunteers for the event, but also monetary donations. The organization said it receives no financial support from the nation or state agencies and therefore relies on local donations. Any person or organization wishing to make a tax-deductible donation is encouraged to contact Kay Scott at (256) 651-8925 or KScott4401@aol.com for the address.
