SOMERVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) – Friday night’s win over Scottsboro was a big win for the Brewer Patriots in many ways.

It was the team’s second win of the year and its second victory against the Wildcats, a team that hadn’t lost a home regional game since 2021, was ranked in the top 10 in 5A and was celebrating its homecoming.

“Everybody fought together, we had some adversity, we had about 20 false start penalties on offense, Scottsboro was making a change, and it was making some of our guys flinch, some of them even shot, so we overcame a little bit of adversity and they all fought together,” Brewers head coach Jordan Miller said. “We made adjustments at halftime as coaches, the players were communicating with each other about what we needed to do, and we just wanted to do it in the second half.”

Friday’s victory was one of the biggest upsets in the Tennessee Valley this high school football season.

The Patriots were on a four-game losing streak heading into the game, which quarterback Anthony Drinkard said they had had enough of.

“I think we’re just tired of losing, I’ll be honest, and we’ve had a good week of practice,” Drinkard said. “We got there and decided we were going to win.”

“Just a desire to stop losing to finally show people that we are as good as we think we can be, and that we have the potential, like everyone else, to go out and win on Friday night,” Miller said. “If we are chasing victory, you are not guaranteed to get it until it reaches four zeros, but we have every right to participate in these discussions.”

The win gave the Patriots the confidence they hope can compete the rest of the season.

“It was awesome. It was a great feeling, you know, just to go out there and get a win, first get a win, get us out of that losing streak, and then beat Scottsboro on their home field on their way home, it was just awesome,” Drinkard said.

Brewer currently sits in fifth place in Class 5A, Region 8, and although the Patriots have work to do to crack the top four in the region, the win gives them life for a playoff spot.

“It was just an eye-opener for them again, just to show that, the losses we learn from them, we have the potential, and moving forward, and we don’t know where it’s going to lead us, it could lead us a thousand different ways,” Miller said. “We’re just going to play game by game, day by day, and see where we end up at the end of the season.”

Brewer hosts Boaz on Friday night as they look to make it back-to-back wins.
