Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers and a suspect were shot and killed Wednesday evening in Franklin County, state police said.

In a statement, they said they responded to a robbery at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Franklin County around 6:11 p.m.

According to the release, the suspects fled onto Interstate 81 and a chase began. The police placed spike strips which stopped the vehicle at exit 3.

Two female suspects obeyed the officers’ orders to exit the vehicle and were taken into custody, but, according to the press release, a suspect opened fire on the officers and hit two of them. The police returned fire and killed the suspect.

The injured soldiers were transported to Wellspan York Hospital, where one was in critical condition and the other was in serious condition, the release said.

In a social media post, Gov. Josh Shapiro said he and his wife were praying for the soldiers.

Authorities asked people to avoid the area during the investigation.

Chambersburg is about 25 miles west of Gettysburg.

In a statement, Pennsylvania State Troopers Association President Stephen Polishan said, “Please join the PSTA in praying for these brave troopers and their families. Every day, the men and women of the Pennsylvania State Police go to work, ready to give their last stand. We cannot thank them enough for their incredible bravery.

Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge President Joseph Regan said in a statement, “These troopers demonstrated the kind of courage and selflessness that defines the Pennsylvania State Police. We are grateful that they are receiving the care they need and pray for their full recovery. The PA FOP is united in supporting wounded Soldiers, their families, and all those who serve with honor.
