2 pedestrians killed in separate crashes in Metro Vancouver

Two pedestrians were killed in separate collisions in Metro Vancouver on Tuesday.

The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said a woman was hit by a bus near West Georgia and Cardero streets in downtown Vancouver around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

« We believe at this point the bus was turning into Georgia Street…did not see the pedestrian and there was a collision, » said Sgt. Steve Addison. « The woman died at the scene. »

Addison said there were many witnesses nearby and police spoke with the driver and others who saw what happened, as well as security and dash cam video from edge.

Charter Bus Line of British Columbia, which is owned by Traxx Holdings, is the operator of the bus involved in the collision. Chairman Matthew Cox declined an interview, saying the company was focusing its energy and resources on those involved in the incident.

“Our thoughts are with those who died, their families and those involved,” the company said in a statement.

Cox said the bus line is cooperating fully with the investigation and has sent a team member to accompany the driver, who he says received medical treatment to deal with the stress.

The charter bus line encourages anyone directly affected by the collision or who saw what happened to contact the Vancouver Victim Assistance Line at (604) 717-2737.

Police have yet to identify the woman who was killed. They are asking anyone who witnessed the crash but left before police responded to call them at (604) 717-3012.

This is the eighth pedestrian fatality in the city this year.
